Process Model Description Source
1 Landfill (LF) Calculates emissions, material use, and energy use associated with construction, operations, closure and post-closure activities, landfill gas and leachate management, and carbon storage. Based on Wang et al. (2021).
2 Waste-to-Energy (WTE) Calculates emissions, mass flows, and resource use and recovery for the mass burn WTE process. Based on an updated version of Harrison et al. (2000) that includes aluminum recovery in the bottom ash and heat losses to moisture and ash.
3 Gasification & Syngas Combustion (GC) Calculates emissions, mass flows, and resource use and recovery for gasification and syngas combustion process. Based on Sardarmehni and Levis (2021).
4 Composting (Comp) Calculates emissions, mass flows, and resource use and recovery for aerobic composting process and final use of compost. Based on Levis and Barlaz (2013) & Hodge et al. (2016).
5 Anaerobic Digestion (AD) Calculates emissions, mass flows, and resource use and recovery for anaerobic digestion process and final use of compost. Based on Levis and Barlaz (2013) & Hodge et al. (2016).
6 Home composting (HC) Calculates emissions, mass flows, and resource use and recovery for aerobic home composting process and final use of compost. Developed using data from Colón et al. (2012) & Andersen et al. (2010).
7 Single-Stream material recovery facility (MRF) Calculates cost, emissions, and energy use associated with material recovery facilities. Based on Pressley et al. (2015).
8 Refused-derived fuel (RDF) Calculates cost, emissions, and energy use associated with RDF production facilities. It is based on Pressley et al. (2014) and updated in Sardarmehni and Levis (2021).
9 Single-family Collection (SF_Col) Calculates cost, emissions, and fossil fuel use associated with MSW collection from single family sector. Based on Jaunich et al. (2016).
10 Multi Family Collection (MF_Col) Calculates cost, emissions, and fossil fuel use associated with MSW collection from multi-family sector. Based on Jaunich et al. (2016).
11 Commercial Collection (COM_Col) Calculates cost, emissions, and fossil fuel use associated with MSW collection from commercial sector. Based on Jaunich et al. (2016).
12 Reprocessing (Reproc) Calculates emissions, mass flows, and resource use and recovery associated with recycling materials. Based on data from RTI International (2003).
13 Transfer Station (TS) Calculates cost, emissions, and energy use associated with transfer stations. -
14 Animal Feed (AF) Calculates cost, emissions, and energy use associated with conversion of food waste to animal feed and final use of produced feed. Developed using data from Kim et al. (2011) & Kim and Kim (2010).
